STEM Night
To provide health snacks and water for the students, parents and community members as they explore the variety of areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math that will expose them to viable career options. Sanford Middle School (SMS) is a STEM Magnet School that lies within District 2 of the City of Sanford. Many students living in the district do not attend the magnet school. In order to reach all students and parents and seize the opportunity to expose them to the areas of STEM that they may otherwise not have, is what SMS PTSA is about. We will provide the food and snack items for the 500+ students, parents and community members that will grace our campus for exposure to cutting edge concepts in STEM. |
November 2019 - Casselberry Elementary School PTSA
Walk To School Day
The PTSA provides small prizes to be passed out at various locations throughout the walking path to our school. Communities celebrate Walk to School Day and Bike to School Day for a variety of reasons, but safety is always at the core. At Casselberry we encourage all of our families to walk or bike to school at least one day a year. PTSA is always in attendance along the route to cheer on our families and offer small prizes for participating. Our families gather at a small park area near the school and then all walk in as one big group each year. |

October 2019 - Layer Elementary School PTA
We will use the funds to purchase supplies for our school's Red Ribbon Week campaign, including: red tablecloths to cut into strips and tie around the trees and columns in front of the school; sweet treats for the staff members who participate in a door decorating contest; paper for flyers to communicate about our events with our families; paper for coloring sheets we will send to the high school upon completion; and bulletin board supplies for our photo display.
Layer Elementary PTA leads the charge of promoting Red Ribbon Week every year at our school. We know it is important to emphasize healthy habits as early as the elementary age. This year, we are using the nationwide theme "Send a Message. Stay Drug Free!" We send home flyers encouraging families to have their students participate in our daily theme days as follows:
Our hope is that these theme days will get the students excited about celebrating the healthy message of staying drug free. We enjoy seeing the entire school community participate and promote a common message throughout the week.
In addition to our theme days, we decorate outside the front of the school so our families and staff are greeted by a "sea of red" when they arrive on our campus throughout the week. We tie red ribbons around all of the trees and columns in front of the school and on the bus ramp. Inside the front lobby, we will have a large bulletin board display of all the photos the students bring to school showing their favorite activity, along with the message, "This is what I can do when I make healthy choices!" We are inviting our staff to decorate their classroom or office doors with a Red Ribbon Week theme as a way of spreading the message throughout the school. For fun, we will have the staff vote on their favorite door, and award prizes (sweet treats) to the winners. We will also give every staff member who participates a candy bar and a note of thanks.
Finally, we are excited to be partnering with our local high school, Winter Springs High School, by having our students complete a coloring page with the message, "I am PAWS-itively drug free!" along with the mascots of our two schools (Layer Lynx and WSHS Bears). Students will color the pictures during the school day on Monday of Red Ribbon Week, and we will then collect them all and send them to WSHS, where they will be displayed for the high schoolers to enjoy. In this way, our students will truly be able to "Send a Message" to our local high school students. We are proud of our Red Ribbon Week activities and the way they increase awareness and education about making healthy choices throughout life and avoiding the dangers of drugs.

GEMS Trunk or Treat
The money from this grant would go towards paying the cost of the DJ provided for this event. To promote a safe environment, we used part of our budget to rent LED lights to ensure the parking lot is well lit during our nighttime event. We also used some of our budget to purchase candy and water to hand out during the event. These costs were necessary, so this grant would greatly help us offset some of these costs. Our Annual GEMS Trunk or Treat is a well-attended event each year. We invite the families from our school in addition to kids in the community surrounding our school. This is a safe and free family-oriented event where kids can trick or treat in the comfort of their own school. We have a well-lit, traffic-free area where we set up decorated trunks and a DJ station. The kids love to see the staff and teachers at this event also. We have games for them to play, and over 30 trunks to get treats at. Several trunks provide fun activities to enrich their minds also. |

April 2019 - Lake Howell High School PTSA
Vaping/Juling Awareness/Prevention Campaign
The Physical Education Department would like to purchase literature and posters to show the students that vaping/juling is just as dangerous if not more so as smoking. The posters are $19.99 each, the PTSA is already purchasing five of them, but we'd like to purchase ten total so that we can post at least one in every student building.
The PTSA is supporting this initiative and working with the PE Dept. We are having a Parent Wellness Awareness General Meeting on April 8th where we will discuss this and other items with the parents to make them aware of these dangers as well. We hope that by partnering with the PE Department and the parents we can emphasize the seriousness of this epidemic to the student body. Not only is it hazardous to their health, it is illegal for students under 18 to have these items and if caught on school grounds they will be prosecuted.

Safety Night
This is our third annual safety night where we have a program for the adults which includes discussion about internet safety, personal safety and vaping. The kids are taken in a different room and this year they played relationship bingo, tried the alcohol simulation goggles and discussed vaping. The program lasts from 5:30 -8:30, so the grant money is used to provide dinner for the families.

Walk to School
On November 14, 2018 we held in A Walk to School day at Casselberry Elementary. The roads were blocked by police and PTSA volunteers were staged along the popular routes to the school to hand out prizes for students and families that participated. The SCSO came out with their Crossing Guard Bear and the City came out with all their Vital Vehicles for the students to get an up-close view after walking to school. We purchased small assorted prizes to reward students who walked to school and had volunteers pass them out at checkpoints to students and their families. |
