Petition for Legislature to Increase Millage

Some parents from Geneva, and others that are on the possible “list” to be closed due to the SCPS Budget Crisis, have created a petition.  You can access the petition at http://www.keethpta.org.  Please print, and ask parents at your schools to sign!  My suggestion is to print the petition in “landscape format”.  Some of the lists will be taken to Tallahassee by parents from Geneva this week.  Others can be faxed or sent to our Legislators.  Click here for addresses or contact information for our Legislators.

Education Commission Gerard Robinson comments on Governor’s Proposed Budget

Statement By:

EDUCATION COMMISSIONER GERARD ROBINSON

Regarding Proposed Budget from the Governor

“Florida’s teachers have done an incredible job providing a learning culture that fosters academic success and growth for each of their students. Today, I want to thank Governor Scott for proposing a budget that will provide significant additional resources that our classroom teachers need to make student dreams a reality. The Governor’s commitment to a high quality education is demonstrated by infusing one billion dollars in state funds to:

·         fund 30,000+ new students,
·         replace one-time state funding,
·         overcome diminishing local revenue, and
·         increase per student funding.

The Governor has also made a commitment to public higher education and student financial aid by maintaining funding in these areas.  This ensures that our students are able to continue to achieve their higher education goals.

This budget will help students gain the tools to master increased standards and graduate from high school college- and career-ready. I also want to thank the State Board of Education for its continued support of increasing our legislative budget to sustain our public education system. The Department’s Strategic Plan aligns with the Governor’s mission and the proposed budget will help preserve what our schools have accomplished in the past and stand to achieve in the future.”

SCCPTA is offering mini-grants to local units!

Funded by the Prevention Coalition, we will donate $1,500 to schools for providing awareness programs to their students. Last year, SCCPTA gave $1,290 to schools that requested the supplemental funding.

Last year, the following schools received up to $150 each for programs that ranged from bullying, Math Super Stars, All Pro Dads, helping families in need and obesity prevention.  Thank you to Lawton Elementary, Red Bug Elementary, Sterling Park Elementary, Wicklow Elementary, Jackson Heights Middle, Milwee Middle, Hagerty High, and Lake Howell High. As a side note, Jackson Heights received the President’s Program Award for their Megan’s Pledge cyberbullying program from the Florida PTA.

We encourage you to submit your existing health & safety programs or any program or campaign you would like to produce but didn’t have the funding to do. The due date for applications is Friday, December 16. We will determine the recipients during the winter break and reward the grants during the first week in January in time for you to get your program done before school is out!
